COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado based Versi-Panel Enclosures was established in 2006. The company designs and manufactures collapsible containers, portables and modular buildings.
Now founders Kevin and Ann Kvols have created something they know will help the thousands of Haitians in need.
New reports say 1.2 million people are currently homeless after the earthquake in Haiti; Kevin Kvols showed FOX21 News the shelters he's made to help the thousands of people who are without a home.
“I feel it's an opportunity to help other people, and it's just as important for us and for our employees since we try and treat them like family, and if we can help, that's our goal -- to help someone else,” said Kvols.
“House His People Project” is making portable shelters and toilet facilities for those who have lost their homes.
Kvols explained each of the shelters are made with pressure-treated lumber, aluminum hinges and recycled PVC joining strips. They have multi-year vinyl roofing and stainless steel attachment snap. He says they're weather/disaster tested, measuring 8 feet by 8 feet by 8 feet. The shelters include six adjustable bunk beds and can sleep nine adults.
“For three years we've been developing a building for the military and two of the units are about to go to Afghanistan on April 17. And we also produce crates and an engineer of mine brought the idea and said, 'Kevin, this is close to your heart, we can make a few changes to our crate design and make a shelter for Haiti.' So in five days with three people this is what we produced,” said Kvols.
One of the most unique qualities these shelters have is that they ship flat and can be installed by two people in less than 30 minutes.
The directions for how to build are simple and mostly described with pictures so there's not a language barrier. Each shelter also comes with paint, paint brush and rollers.
Kvols says it takes about three hours with eight people working on one shelter. Each shelter cost $1,300.
The company is looking for sponsors to help with the shelters. If you'd like more information on how to help or about the shelters, e-mail to HouseHisPeople@versi-panelenclosures.com or call 1-866-928-5710, ext. 141.
