PUEBLO, COLO. -- A Pueblo man now faces murder charges in connection with his infant son's death.
Detectives with the Special Victims Unit of the Pueblo Police Department arrested 23-year-old Anthony Angel for causing the death of 5-month-old Antonio Angel.
The infant was admitted to Parkview Hospital on Nov. 18 after he reportedly stopped breathing.
Doctors could not find any obvious signs of injury, so he was transported to Denver Children's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition with a brain injury.
Angel died Nov. 21 after being taken off life support.
Officials listed his death as suspicious pending autopsy results.
Authorities in Pueblo now say the autopsy showed severe blunt trauma to the baby's brain, and medical professionals determined this was an acute injury.
The infant's father, Anthony, is being charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.
According to police, during the investigation authorities also found that the baby's mother, 23-year-old Brandi Strawn, had been involved in a theft.
She was booked into a county jail on charges of felony theft by receiving and pawn broker violations.
