Sephora offered free makeovers for women with breast cancer Sunday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Sephora at Briargate Plaza offered makeovers and makeup tips to some deserving women on Sunday; women who have battled or are currently battling breast cancer.
"When you go through treatment for cancer you lose your hair, you lose your eyelashes and eyebrows, your skin changes," Sephora skin care manager Mikki Riggin said. "Everything about you seems to feel like a lesser version of yourself."
The idea to provide a day of makeovers spawned from breast cancer survivor Lana Yoder Dale. When Dale was going through her first round of chemo, a friend gave her a gift certificate for a beauty consultation in Denver. It was a boost of confidence for her as she battled the physical changes cancer forced on her body.
"When you lose your hair, you suddenly become the icon of cancer," Dale said. "So everywhere you go, everyone who sees you knows you're going through chemo, and you become very self-conscious about it."
When Dale approached Riggin about the idea, the idea was quickly set in motion. For Riggin, it was an opportunity to contribute locally to women before the holiday season. With parties and pictures a staple of the season, Riggin understood that the women battling cancer might not want to look like women in that position.
"You talk about it all the time," Riggin said. "That's all anybody talks to you about. And so to give them a way to have something that has to do nothing to do with it is the best gift of all."
Sephora at Briargate Plaza has plans to turn the one-time event into a semi-annual event.
