Will be in Pueblo Tuesday and Wednesday
PUEBLO, COLO. -- A historic, restored B-17G bomber airplane will be in Pueblo on November 18 and 19 as part of a national tour. The bomber was built in 1945.
Known as the Flying Fortress "Aluminum Overcast," this type of plane was very active throughout the 1940s. It is only one of 14 Fortress's still flying. Thousands of these aircraft were part of the bombing effort that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II.
"This airplane started out as the ultimate weapon in the '41, '42, '43 era," said Neil Morrison, B-17G pilot. "By the end of the war, it was getting to be obsolete. This airplane, designed in the 1930s, first went to war for the British. We sold them to the British before we were involved in the war."
The Pueblo stopover is hosted by Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum and will be at Pueblo Memorial Airport located on the eastern part of the city.
Flights are available for purchase, and there will be ground tours as well. The event is sponsored through the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and is part of the "Salute to Veterans" tour.
For more on the public flights and to learn more about the plane's significance, go to the B-17 web site.
Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-359-6217. Pre-book prices are $359 for EAA members and $399 for non-members. Walk-up prices are $385 for EAA members and $425 for non-EAA members.
