COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Tuesday was an exciting day for the Air Force Academy and the Colorado Springs Airport.

The two unveiled a new display highlighting the academy at the airport.

The artwork is located near gate one, and was designed to recognize the school as one of the primary icons of the region.

Several themes were incorporated into the display including academics, athletics, military, leadership, character and airmanship.

The new addition was a joint effort between academy leadership and airport staff.

The City of Colorado Springs and the school want all visitors to know our city is home to the nation's only Air Force Academy.

"Mayor Bach is exactly right, he and I sat down about 20 months ago, and we talked about the vision here," Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, Superintendent of the Air Force Academy, said. "They are going to see that now."

City leaders, airport staff and cadets celebrated the artwork Tuesday during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

"It is going to educate the public on a lot of things that go on at the academy," Lt. Gen. Gould said. "It just gives the public a glimpse of what takes up a majority of these cadets time as they dedicate their college years."

The design is part of an ongoing terminal improvement program at the Colorado Springs Airport.
