COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Two people were killed after being hit by an S.U.V. at the intersection of East Pikes Peak Avenue and Parkside Drive in Colorado Springs Monday afternoon.

Officers said a Ford van had stalled in the left lane of Pikes Peak Ave after running out of gas.

Three of the occupants of the van exited the vehicle and were attempting to push the van out of traffic.

An eastbound Dodge Durango came up behind the stalled van, but the driver was unable to stop after he realized the van wasn't moving.

The Durango slammed into the rear of the van crushing two of the three people.

David Dew made the initial 911 call, and says it was emotional to watch.

"I kind of just started crying and I couldn't control it. I told the dispatchers hey there's an accident," he then explained, "there's a child not moving with a lot of blood on his face and also someone else under the vehicle."

The responder told Dew to check the man's pulse. After finding none, Dew was joined by a local nurse who attempted CPR on the boy.

"It was a big community effort to see how people just actually stopped in the middle of the road, stopped what they were doing to make sure they were okay," he said.

The younger victim was taken to Memorial Hospital where he died as a result of serious bodily injuries.

The third person outside the van sustained moderate injuries. Three of the five people who remained in the van were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Durango wasn't hurt.

Detectives from the Major Accident Unit are assisting with the investigation. The driver is in questioning as the investigation continues as to the cause of the crash.
