Questions & Answers
Question

What is hydro jetting?

Answer
Hydro jetting just means that you are cleaning your drains with extreme water pressure. Hydro jetting is different from snaking or other types of drain cleaning because it requires heavier equipment and has to be done professionally. Hydro jetting is usually needed for commercial properties like restaurants or hospitals, but it can work for residences as well.
Question

What is a "T & P" Valve on a water heater?

Answer

A T & P valve on a water heater is a safety device to prevent a water heater from exploding. T & P is simply the abbreviation for temperature and pressure, but this abbreviation can be confusing when you think about how it applies to water heaters.

The reason to have a T & P valve is to monitor the pressure and the temperature on your water tank. This is an important device to have because it will prevent your water tank from exploding if there is a situation where the temperature of your water tank exceeds 180 degrees Fahrenheit, or the water pressure in you tank exceeds one hundred and fifty pounds. As a regular home consumer this kind of engineering may not make sense, but a T & P pressure valve is a very important feature on your water heater.

Question

Brown water comes out of my faucet, what is going on?

Answer

When brown water comes from your faucet it usually means you have rusty galvanized iron piping. Rust dissolves into the water giving it a brownish color. If you do not use the water for a day or two the water normally gets browner . The only cure for this is to replace the worn out piping. Sometimes you may experience brown water from work that has been done on the water system and dirt has entered the system this usually can be flushed by running the water for a few minutes.

Question

Why is there a trap under my sink?

Answer

There are several reasons why there is a trap under your sink, and if you are renovating your home, you should always make sure that one is installed in every room in your house where you have a faucet. This includes the kitchen, the bathroom, the utility room and anywhere that you may have plumbing . A P-Trap, which is sometimes called by plumbers as a Stink Trap or water trap is the "U" portion which makes your sink safe from incoming sewer gasses and anything else like vermin that might come into your home through the drain. This is accomplished by the water which rests in the "U" portion of the trap.

The fact of the matter is that without P-Traps in your home the smell would be unbearable. not to mention dangerous, sewer gases contain all sorts of chemicals including methane which besides being explosive is deadly. Every year a plumber dies from inhaling methane while working on sewer piping, In fact, sewer gas is so bad that a person entering a manhole must be attached by a harness so they can be lifted out in case they pass out.

Question

What is a vent and why does my plumbing system need one?

Answer
A plumbing vent sticks out of the roof of your home, about 12” high. The vent allows for the release of sewer gasses outside of your home so that they do not remain inside. It also provides air into your pipes so that fixtures (like your sinks) will drain properly. Without vents, a fixture may be unable to drain properly causing another drain to back up into your home.
Question

Besides a leaking faucet or pipe what else can contribute to a high water bill?

Answer
Leaks are commonly found in toilet tanks, resulting from worn parts or improper alignment of a part of the flushing mechanism. Stop these leaks right away because they’ll add up in your monthly utilities.
Question

My toilet is running what can I do?

Answer
A running toilet is usually the result of a broken or faulty flapper (aka, flush valve or “tank” ball) in the bottom of the tank that needs to be replaced. The chain in your tank could be the culprit as well. If it is too long it can get caught under the flapper. Both problems are easily fixed.
Question

How can I prevent clogged drains?

Answer

Do not rinse fats or cooking oils down the kitchen sink. Liquid fats solidify in the cold pipes and create clogs. To help prevent clogs, fit all your tubs and shower drains with a strainer that catches hair and soap chips, and clean the strainer regularly.
