Questions & Answers
Question

When can I plant my flower nursery or garden in Colorado Springs?

Answer
Trees and woody shrubs can be planted anytime you can dig a hole. You can usually start sometime in March, plant all summer, and continue thru October and maybe into November. Perennial flowers can be planted from May thru October.
Question

When should I prune my shrubs?

Answer

Dead, diseased and damaged wood and suckers should be removed as soon as you notice it. Evergreen trees and shade trees should be pruned when they are dormant - late Fall, then early Spring. Spring flowering trees should be pruned right after they are done blooming.

Question

What should I do with my lawn in the Spring?

Answer

Do not use a power rake ro de-thatcher. This will really stress the lawn.
Aerate the lawn with a core aerator
Fertilize the grass with Jirdon Greenmaster or pro rich organic turf food. Another option is Jirdon Turf Food with dimension to stop the germination of weed seeds.
If your lawn is thin, overseed it with a grass seed blend including fescue and ryegrass.
Top dress the lawn with 1/4 -1/2 " of compost if the soil is bad.

Question

When and how should I water my landscape?

Answer

All plants should be watered every 2-3 days for the first 2-3 months they're in the ground. Trees and shrubs should be watered every 1-2 weeks. This is best done with a drip system. You can also set the hose at the base of each tree and let it trinkle for a few hours.

Perinnial flower beds should be watered 1-2 times a week depending on the species. This is best done with a soaker hose or drip system.

Question

When and how should I fertilize my trees and shrubs in my home flower nursery?

Answer

Trees and shrubs should be fertilized once in the Spring (May). Use a fertilizer formulated for the type of plant - evergreen, flowering, or shade.
