DENVER (AP) -- Public school funding has bedeviled Colorado lawmakers for years.

The process has resulted in a system where many schools are left with slipping tax support and slim prospects for even treading water.

That could change under a sweeping overhaul getting its first review Tuesday. The Senate Education Committee has reserved the biggest room in the Capitol to start work on the complicated rewrite.

The bill before lawmakers Tuesday is just the start of the work, though. The bill relies on approval by voters of a new tax, likely a higher income tax, but the public hasn't seen details yet.
