Carpal tunnel syndrome has become more prevalent than ever before thanks to an increasing use of computers, hand-held devices, video game controllers and other forms of action that cause consistent – and repetitive -- wear and tear on your joints.

However, there are other not-as-commonly-known forms of carpal tunnel causes, such as hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, obesity, wrist injuries and smoking.
Regardless of the cause, the repercussions are just as varied, ranging from tingling, numbness, weakness or pain in the fingers, hand or wrist, with more severe cases experiencing pain in the forearm or tendon.
Fortunately, carpal tunnel is preventable and treatable.

Here is a list of helpful hints you can do at home to prevent from undergoing surgery:

1. Discontinue performing activities that cause numbness or pain. Or periodically rest your hands, wrist and fingers in between sets of the activity.
2. Ice your wrist for 10-15 minutes one to two times an hour.
3. Take anti-inflammatory medication or pain relievers.
4. Wear a wrist splint at night to keep your wrist in a neutral position.

While the beginning stages of carpal tunnel may have already settled in, following these simple steps may relieve some discomfort and prevent you from needing some serious treatment.
